Aromatherapy is derived from the ancient practice of using natural plant essences to promote health and well being. It consists of the use of pure essential oils obtained from the flowers, fruit, bark and roots of a wide assortment of plants. The oils are extracted by steam distillation or cold-pressing.
Aromatherapy can ease a wide assortment of ailments, including alleviating aches and pains, injuries, as well as relieving the discomforts of many health problems.
The essential oils work in two main ways, as an ‘aroma’ through the respiratory system and by absorption through the skin. The odoriferous molecules of the essential oils are very volatile, and their inhalation can activate very pleasant feelings, memories and responses. But when massaged into the skin, the essential oils permeate the epidermis to the deeper skin layers, where they infuse into the capillaries, and are carried around the body to organs, glands and tissues. Individual essential oils have an affinity with certain systems of the body helping to alleviate respiratory, digestive, circulatory, hormonal problems and many other internal issues. When combined with a massage, our natural immune mechanisms are stimulated both with the essential oils and the massage to create a natural healing process.
At LaVida Massage we incorporate lavender, eucalyptus, citrus, and peppermint into your massage at your request. Lavender helps allergies, anxiety, hypertension and headaches. Citrus helps with colds and digestion and improves your mood. Peppermint takes away nausea, helps with sinusitis and exhaustion. Talk to your therapist about which essential oils are best for you.
