Neuromuscular Therapy

neuro.jpg(NMT), also known as Neuromuscular Massage, is a form of manual soft-tissue therapy in which intense pressure is applied to a specific "trigger point," or concentrated area of a muscle, in order to release tension in the entire muscle. Spasms that occur within a muscle affect only a small portion of the muscle, decreasing blood flow and depriving it of oxygen. This process creates a buildup of lactic acid in the affected area and causes pain to radiate throughout the muscle.

Benefits

One of the advantages of Neuromuscular Massage as compared to other massage therapies that are used to manage and treat pain is that it identifies and works very specific points of the body…specifically, those locations where the pain occurs to provide the best method of treatment for the pain.

Method

NMT therapists are trained to locate trigger points, typically through traditional or Swedish massage, before applying Neuromuscular Massage techniques (typically with their hands or elbow) to neutralize spasms and increase blood flow to the affected area. Clients who follow a well-administered NMT program from a LaVida Massage certified therapist have reported substantially decreased or eliminated pain, reduced tingling/numbness, increased flexibility, better posture, fewer headaches and better overall well-being.
